The Auto GPS System – What It Is Good For
GPS Auto Car Navigation System
Not so long ago, having an auto GPS system installed on your car
seemed like taken from a sci-fi movie. But things have changed quite
a lot lately and this technology, once used only by the army, can
now be safely and legally used by anyone that wants it.
The market
offers nowadays a lot of products and devices equipped with GPS
technology. It is as simple as that. You just search for Global
Positioning Satellite systems, or GPS, as they are widely known,
and then you choose which one you like best.
Here are some basic facts about the auto GPS system. The device
you buy actually consists of a GPS receiver that is afterwards installed
inside your car, preferably on the dashboard. With this piece of
technology in your vehicle, you enter the destination point and
then follow the directions it gives you. It saves a lot of time
spent with reading maps, don’t you think? It is easier to
install an auto GPS system on your card then constantly asking for
directions or driving yourself nuts while trying to make some sense
from a paper map.
The technology used by an auto GPS system is quite amazing. There
are about 24 satellites on the orbit that can communicate with the
auto GPS system from your car. They send vital information to your
device and the device corroborates this information with the maps
that it has in its memory. This will give you the position where
you are at a certain moment and the data will change at the same
pace you are moving as the communication flow between the auto GPS
system and the satellites is constant. Here are the components of
an auto GPS system:
- a receiver: it contains 12 channels and according to its quality,
the accuracy is greater;
- an antenna: this is built for capturing the signals, so it must
be oriented towards the sky;
- a CPU: as other devices, the auto GPS system acts like a mini
computer, with a CPU that calculates your position based on the
given data;
- a DVD hard drive: this feature is necessary for storing maps;
- a display screen: this one is needed so you can see the information
displayed in front of your eyes;
- voice interface: this feature is available for upgraded products.
There is a certain terminology used by those that are accustomed
with a GPS auto system. You may have heard of something that is
called a cold start. This is the definition for the condition of
your data bank when you first start your GPS system. Once it starts
gathering information, it will start monitoring and showing where
you are. Depending on the model you purchase, you can wait for only
half a minute, or several minutes, until the device gets a 3D fix
and starts doing its job. Some situations may appear, like when
you are under a bridge or near bigger buildings. If you have a more
advanced auto GPS system, the update of your position will be rendered
in matter of seconds, while basic units may take longer.
All this talk about technology may make you think that an auto
GPS system is expensive. Think again. There are many products on
the market that are sold with price tags lower than $200. Of course,
if you are interested in a smarter unit, you can purchase one at
a bigger price, even for over $1,000. No matter which model you
choose, you, too, can enjoy the advantages of this technology while
you are behind the wheel of your car.
